It's a boat!

So I wasn't planning on doing this activity but my software arrived and I was excited. I've had Photoshop CS3 for over a year now so I've been using that but I knew flash was coming up so I made my purchase. I think my partner was more excited then me when it showed up though, she's got a pretty amazing photography blog plastic shoot where she she showcases photo's we've taken and also writes articles on various toy camera's and films. If you get a spare minute check it out. So she wanted to play around with Photoshop CS5. When she was at work the other night I go the chance to look over the software and just thought I'd give flash a go ended up doing the assignment. Being in the Navy I've just come off ships and come ashore for a period and so I was a little resigned to the idea of having to draw a ship, but what can I say I wouldn't be in the Navy if I was a sucker for a 'ye old sailing ship now would I? lol.

Adjustment Amazement!

Adjustment levels, this effect had the biggest change in my low-light image it went from dusk to midday!!! What I learnt here was what an impact adjusting the levels could really have.

The Lighthouse Under the Knife

Cropping... Well I think it worked out well for this Picture. This activity was good in that everyones knows about cropping but I never really put a lot of thought into why I would crop an image and if I do what do i want the image to say after the cropping that it doesn't say before I crop it.

Flatbed Scanner

Who wants cake? I was a little slow on the up take as to what I was meant to do but i think I got there in the end.

Assessment 1

Assessment 1

The promo I ended up with was very different then what I started with. When I originally conceived the idea I thought of this little tornado dude picking his path of destruction. I wasn’t able to create something on paper or in Photoshop that was as good as what I had in my head so I decided my little tornado dude would become my mascot. I create a white space version of my promo that can be seen on my flickr account but I didn’t feel this had what I needed even though I did quite like it. So I went back to the drawing board. I was looking though holga galleries online and I came across this photo someone had taken of a street at night it was a long exposure and all the car lights moved across the photo. This is when I idea struck me I should use the lights of a city to create my ‘Intended Chaos’ because I think that’s a good description of what a city is. What you probably can’t tell from the photo is that you’re looking at the city of Canberra from its highest look out the Telstra Tower. So I went up there at night with my camera and once I got to the observation deck I pressed it to the window and kept it open for a few minutes moving it up and down to create my desired effect. Once I go the film developed and the image on disk I started my promo again.

About this promo:

Position: I positioned the image so that I could put the text above and below it and so that it was the main focal point.

Contrast: I Felt the yellow/orange on black made the image pop also the image was taken a night crating this contrast on its own.

Movement: I wanted the image to look like it was moving really fast up and down and back and forth.

Line: All the text is in a line parallel to the line with in the image.

Unity: To hold the promo together the colour of the text was taken with the eyedropper from the image. I felt it was important to have two different colour fonts so that the promo wasn’t only black and orange. To show what the blog was about I decided to go with the green which was also from using the eyedropper in the image because contrasted nicely against the rest of the image with out looking out of place but drawing your eye.

Grids

Grids Grids Grids... so this wasn't as hard as trying to find a grid less magazine page but it was interesting to look at layouts from the prospective of creating them.

100 Apples

This assignment was a lot harder than originally anticipated. I tried to start off logically and draw the obvious apples first and the different sides of the ordinary apple. As I progressed my apples became more outlandish, featuring faces and wigs instead of the usual stem and leaf. I thought this assignment was eye opening, in the fact that there are many sides to the one object. They can be ordinary and mundane or as out there as an apple with sun glasses.

Double Digits... Activities 10 and 11

Activties 10 and 11.

What I found interesting about activity 10, was not so much what I submitted but that some fonts don't actually come in bold, italic etc.

Activity 11 was interesting to in that I think subconsciously I knew that you relate certain fonts to certain themes but I never actually thought about it that that used right could probably be quite powerful in putting an idea across.

Let's go back in time... Pt 2

Activity 6 White Space

Promo...

So a promo for this site... Not an easy task and not a lot of time left to get it done... So I thought I'd go with a Tornado as a visual expression of my blog name. It hasn't been easy to get Mr Tornado from my book onto the computer, I've been playing around with it in photoshop to try and make it look computer animated instead of drawn, watching tutorials on youtube and looking up how to do it on the net in the end I couldn't find what I needed. Being a complete photoshop novice just tried to do the best I could with my limit knowledge. I've posted a very rough draft but the more I think about it I don't know if I'm going to go with it.

The First Big Adventure.

Well another day another activity. As I'm off to a new work week I thought I would get activity 3 done while the weekend was at hand. It took longer then I expected but I'm starting to get the gist of things although I know I'll learn more once I get the feedback I feel this is one of those activity's where my limited knowledge from the reading will only get me so far but once I have feedback and see different reasoning and approaches I'll actually learn a lot more. I think that's something you get instantly in a classroom that you can't get on the net. As this is a new learning environment for me I'm finding it interesting navigating around the activities and having to rely on myself more. So new week new activity well as work will permit hopefully it's a quiet week and I can get a clearer idea on activity 4 and get it up.

It Begins

Well today was my first real day getting things rolling... Activity 2 is done and dusted and posted to my flickr account and even though it was one small step everybody has to start somewhere right? So tomorrow is looking at Activity 3. I also had a look ahead at some black square problems and some pos/neg stuff. I haven't come up with anything concrete but its a work in progress.

As you can see by the pictures I'm not much of a
drawer, but I think each project reached its goal in getting me to think
differently about things, I dont think I'm near anything I'd like to summit yet but I do think I'm on my way there.
